Opener pricing splits cleanly in two.
A repair is priced on the part and the time: a gear kit
A repair is priced on the part and the time: a gear kit, a pair of sensors, a logic board, or a remote and a re-pair. A replacement is priced on the unit you choose, meaning drive type, enough power for the weight of your door, and whether you want Wi-Fi and battery backup, plus removal of the old one and a full re-balance of the door. That re-balance is part of every opener install we do. A new motor dragging an unbalanced door is how the last one died.

Three questions settle it. How old is the unit?
Under about ten years, repair is usually right: the motor and rail have life left and the failure is normally one component.
What failed?
Gears, capacitors, limit switches, sensors, remotes and wall consoles are all stocked repairs, and a stripped drive gear is roughly an hour of work. A dead logic board on a discontinued model is a different conversation, because the board alone can cost most of what a whole new opener costs installed.
And what does the repair cost against a replacement?
Once a repair passes about half the installed price of a new opener, we tell you to replace it, and we quote both ways so you see the two numbers side by side rather than taking our word for it.

LiftMaster is the default for the same reason most LiftMaster repairs finish on the first visit: parts stay standardized across the range and stay available for years after a model is retired, which matters more than a spec sheet on a machine you expect to run for fifteen years. Ask about the side-mount type if your garage has a low ceiling, a high-lift track, or a bedroom directly above it. The motor moves off the ceiling to the wall beside the door and takes most of its noise with it.

Chain and belt drives, with smart Wi-Fi models available on request.
The second brand we stock, fitted and warrantied exactly like the LiftMaster.
Trade-supplied, so the remotes and keypads are matched at the install rather than bought separately.

Linear comes out of the access-control side of the industry, where the remotes, keypads and receivers are the product rather than an afterthought, and that shows in how the controls go together. For a homeowner the practical difference from a shelf brand is simpler than the badge: the unit is specified for the weight and height of your door instead of picked by width, the accessories are paired on the day, and the company that fitted it is the one you ring when something stops working. Linear keeps to chain and belt, so if your garage wants the side-mount type this is not the one, and we will tell you that rather than making it fit. Ask us to quote it beside the LiftMaster equivalent for your door and we will put both numbers in front of you rather than steering you.
Guardian

Guardian sells through the trade rather than retail, and that shapes what you get: the opener on your ceiling was specified for your door, and its parts route back through the same supply chain we already run. Guardian covers all three, chain, belt and the side-mount, so a low ceiling or a bedroom over the garage does not rule it out. Tell us what you actually want the opener to do, including whether you want phone control at all, and we will match the unit to that rather than to a features list. Plenty of people want a machine that opens the door and nothing else, and that is a perfectly good brief.
Openers we repair
We repair every brand below, including the three we install. Chamberlain, Genie and Craftsman are machines we service rather than sell, and there is nothing wrong with that: a well-installed one is worth keeping running, and we carry the parts to do it.
LiftMaster
Worn plastic drive gears in older chain units, travel limits that drift so the door stops short, sensors knocked out of line.
Gear kits, sensors, remotes and keypads ride on the van.
Chamberlain
Shares a parent company and much of its internals with LiftMaster, so parts are rarely the problem.
Most were fitted by a homeowner or a builder, so alongside worn gears we spend real time correcting the install: rails out of level, springs never balanced to the door.
Genie
Screw drives need the right grease on the rail, and the wrong one stiffens in a Maryland January until the door crawls.
On newer DC belt models it is usually the control board or the wall console. Genie runs its own remote protocol, so we carry the Genie-specific remotes rather than sending you hunting.
Craftsman
Sold through Sears for decades and still on plenty of DMV ceilings.
Most were built on Chamberlain hardware, so gears, sensors and remotes are often still available. If the board has died on a thirty-year-old unit we will be straight about whether chasing parts is worth it.
Linear
One of the three we install, so a Linear on our books gets stocked parts and the same warranty on the work.
If we did not fit yours, we will still service it, and the parts come through the same trade supplier.
Guardian
Also one of ours to install, and serviced the same way whether or not we were the ones who fitted it.
Boards, sensors and remotes come through the trade supplier we already use.
That list is not the limit. Gears, sensors, boards, remotes and wall controls are broadly common across the industry, so most other brands are a stocked part rather than a special order, and we will tell you on the phone if yours turns out to be the exception. Where an opener is genuinely past economic repair we will say so, and the replacement we quote will be one of the three above.
Chain, belt, or side-mount
Chain drive
Chain drive is the workhorse and the loudest, running a metal chain along a metal rail.
Fine for a detached garage, hard to live with under a bedroom.
Belt drive
Belt drive runs a reinforced rubber belt and is far quieter, which is what we fit by default on attached garages.
Side-mount (jackshaft)
A side-mount sits on the wall beside the door and turns the torsion shaft directly, leaving the ceiling clear.
The one to ask about for a low ceiling, a high-lift track, or a room over the garage. Usually the priciest of the three.
If a bedroom or office shares a wall or ceiling with the garage, belt or side-mount is worth the difference. If nobody can hear it, a chain drive will run for years and save you money.
One term to watch while you shop: "direct drive" gets used for two different machines. Sometimes it means a side-mount unit like the one above, and sometimes a motor-on-rail design that we do not install. Ask which one a quote refers to before you compare prices on it.
Wi-Fi and smart openers
A smart opener lets you open, close and check the door from your phone, and tells you when it was last used, which settles the did-I-leave-it-open question from the office. Most current units have the radio built in, and older openers can often take a retrofit controller instead of a whole new unit. We will tell you which camp yours falls into before you buy anything.
Setup is where these go wrong
Setup is where these go wrong. The opener needs a stable 2.4 GHz signal at the ceiling of the garage, often the weakest corner of the house. We test the signal where the unit will actually live before calling the job done, then pair your remotes, keypad and in-car buttons.
Safety reversal and photo eyes
Every opener we touch gets its safety features tested before we leave. Two matter most: the door has to reverse when it meets an obstruction, and the photo eyes near the floor have to stop and reverse the door the moment the beam breaks.

Since January 1, 1993, residential garage door openers sold in the US have been required under UL 325 to include an external entrapment-protection device, meaning photoelectric eyes or a door-edge sensor, or else a constant-contact wall control. Photo eyes are how most manufacturers meet that requirement rather than being the requirement itself, which is why you occasionally meet an older setup that satisfies it a different way.
Whichever way yours is built, the protection has to work. If your opener has nothing stopping it at the floor, or the eyes have been defeated with a twist of wire so the door stops nuisance-reversing, it is not safe around children or pets and we will not leave it that way.
