Modern openers have two safety systems that are supposed to stop the door from crushing anything in its path. Both can fail silently. Here’s how to test them in under a minute.
The photo-eye test
With the door open, start it closing and wave a broom through the beam near the floor. The door should immediately reverse. If it doesn’t, the photo eyes may be misaligned or failing.
The reversal (force) test
Lay a roll of paper towels flat in the door’s path and close it. When the door touches the roll it should reverse. If it keeps pushing, the down-force is set too high.
