Every winter the calls spike: “my opener worked yesterday and now it won’t budge.” Cold weather doesn’t break openers so much as expose problems that were already there.
Cold stiffens everything
Old grease thickens, metal contracts, and weather seal can freeze to the floor. A door that was borderline out of balance in summer becomes too much for the opener in a cold snap.
Check the force settings
Most openers have an adjustable force dial. A small increase can compensate for winter stiffness. But if you’re cranking it way up, the real problem is balance or worn parts.
Lubricate before the freeze
A fall tune-up with the right cold-rated lubricant prevents most winter no-starts. Wipe old grease off the tracks and lube the rollers, hinges, and springs.
